New machine – new possibilities: by buying a S41/1600 of Studer, SPN Schwaben Präzision has increased the capacity and flexibility of their own production processes. Having replaced an older Karstens K27, the state-of-the-art universal grinding machine S41 brings along a number of enlargements of existing options and functionalities and thus extends the scope of the company when it comes to grinding processes for gearbox solutions and toothing components of all kinds. One crucial factor: not only makes the S41 the external cylindrical grinding of components possible, which is necessary e.g. for bearing and sealing ring seats, but it also makes unround, thread or internal grinding possible, which had to be done by other machines or in other production areas before. For Stefan Ohmüller, Head of Production Technologies at SPN, another decisive criterion for the S41 was the large installation space which the new machine offers. He said “The crucial argument for us was not so much the absolute size of the components but, above all, the possibility to place further equipment, e.g. for the rotary dressing.” Another aspect speaking in favour of the S41 is, according to Mr Ohmüller, also the speed, which the high speed drive offers “and which broadens our scope in terms of a faster processing of possible production peaks”. The S41 has been running at SPN since the middle of May 2017 as one of five external cylindrical grinding machines and, in the future, will cover grinding operations for all applications and sectors in the plant in Nördlingen.
