The installation by Liebherr and the SPN staff was completed within one working day. The following day, the Liebherr application technician began intensive staff training so that the machine could be fully implemented and put into operation after just one week. “For SPN, the LS 180 E has not only been purchased as a technological development, but also as a necessary extension to absorb acute production peaks and to increase production capacities in the long term,” explained SPN Production Manager Alexander Deffner [Dipl.-Ing.]. Now, in addition to two 300 mm gear-shaping machines, a second 180 mm machine is also in use. The LS 180 E is designed for a toothing diameter of up to 180 mm and therefore produces particularly efficient, and above all precise, toothing on the large number of SPN workpieces with diameters of less than 180 mm. The new machine is versatile and can produce both straight and helical gears. The “E” in the name stands here for electronic diagonal guidance. Where the helix angle of the existing gear shaping machines still has to be defined manually by changing the respective gate, the LS 180 E can now do this steplessly via input on the control panel. Alexander Deffner: “In the workpiece range up to 180 mm we currently have a high order volume and are at the limit of our capacity. The LS 180 E is the ideal expansion for this. Its shorter set-up times also make the production of customer-specific finished gear wheels in smaller quantities much more dynamic”. The loader of the LS 180 E, which primarily performs the loading and removal of parts fully automatically, also ensures greater productivity. This relieves the employees of time in order to pay even more attention to QA inspections and multi-machine operation. With the new machine not only is the production capacity increased, but also the potential to further increase the quality level of the SPN gearboxes.
