What does „muc18“ stand for? The “munich urban concept” is the vehicle of the TUfast Eco Team for the season 2018/2019. The main difference to last year´s vehicle “Muc017” is that this one is much more similar to a prototype vehicle. With “muc018”, the team wanted to build a vehicle which is much more similar to a road vehicle. Measures for this were the adaptation of the track width to the front axle and back axle, independent suspension, a less aerodynamic  “droplet form” of the vehicle, but instead road vehicle typical characteristics (A-pillar, smaller windshield than muc017, big bonnet, wheel arches, hatchback) and space in the interior for 2 persons. The autonomous system is also brand new, i.e. the “muc18” can move without driver. SPN supports the TUfast Eco Team in terms of the design, calculation (Timo Ebert, SPN) and production (Sascha Nebrich, SPN) of the drive train of the Eco vehicle. Special support was given in terms of engineering and the production of the coupling, the packaging of the back wheel carrier and the gearbox choice.

“Especially the various requirements of a highly efficient gearbox, like e.g. the ratio, material combination and lubricant could only be realised thanks to the help of SPN´s know-how and thus considerably increase the total efficiency of our drive train,“ the head of the department chassis, Philip Bilfinger of the TUfast Eco Team, said.

The biggest conceptual change to last year´s vehicle was made via an open hollow shaft in the felly, to a small, closed planetary gearbox directly in the wheel carrier. The challenge to integrate a gearbox with very small installation space into the wheel carrier requires many reflections during the planning and production. The requirements of functionality, mountability and especially weight could be optimized thanks to many interactions between the racing team and SPN.

„Company SPN Schwaben Präzision based in Nördlingen is not only for the chassis a popular contact for us. The intense co-operation, also at the site of SPN, the interest of the apprentices and the training supervisor in our project and also the scope of the sponsoring are unique for us. Thus, SPN is 2018 premium sponsor quite rightly and one of the most important partners in our project,” team manager Sebastian Schlegel says proudly. The TUfast Eco Team looks forward to the upcoming competitions (EducEco 24.05-26.05.2018 and Shell Eco Marathon 05.07-08.07.2018) and does not only hope to win the efficiency competition with the optimized drive, but also to win the „Technical Innovation Award“ for the best technical achievement. SPN and especially the SPN training workshop thanks for the great co-operation with the TUfast Eco team 2018 and whishes lots of success for the upcoming competitions! We´ll keep our fingers crossed!
